— Luke Kamieniecki and Luke Farny led the way for Steamboat Springs Winter Sports Club freestyle skiers Saturday and Sunday at the Winter Park Winter Heat Rocky Mountain Division moguls skiing competition.

Kamieniecki finished second in Saturday's open moguls competition and Sunday's junior's moguls.

Farny, returning to snow for his first competition since a serious skateboarding injury last season, was eighth Saturday and ninth Sunday.

Kamieniecki was edged out in both competitions by Winter Park skier Brandon Cronin. Cronin's 23.42 points was better than Kamieniecki's 22.18 Saturday. The difference wasn't even that wide Sunday.

"It was pretty tightly contested," SSWSC freestyle coach Nate Bird said. "It was the judge's call. I thought my guy won. They thought their guy won."

Alison Crowe was the club's top female finisher. She was sixth Saturday and fourth Sunday. Kristen Sweeney, fourth Saturday; Alissa Pinkoski, 10th Saturday; and Jessica Mader, sixth Sunday, also logged top-10 finishes.

Lars Johnson was 10th in Saturday's boys competition while Colton Harding was seventh in the Sunday event.

"We had 19 skiers in the event, and Saturday 18 of the 19 stood up and made clean, solid runs. That was exciting to see," Bird said. "It's rare to see that many kids just clean up. It was super entertaining."

Soroco girls basketball team drops 2 games

The Soroco girls basketball team struggled on a weekend road trip, losing a pair of games to league opponents.

Rams' coach David Bruner said he's still happy with the progress he has seen in his young squad, however.

Soroco lost, 56-50, on Friday night at West Grand, an improvement from a 21-point loss earlier in the season. The team then dropped a game at Western Slope-leading Paonia, 64-51.

"That game Saturday is probably the best we've played this year," Bruner said.

Senior Sarajane Rossi led the Rams with 25 points.

"We're getting better," Bruner said. "These young kids are learning."

Soroco returns to action Friday as it welcomes Hayden, which has one loss on the season.
