Local women invited to Storm Peak conference
Storm Peak Laboratory, a permanent mountaintop research facility located on the summit of Mount Werner, has received $300,000 in funding from the National Science Foundation ADVANCE program to create a networking program for women interested in atmospheric science.
The lab is inviting two local teachers and two high school students to participate in select forums and activities at the conference.
The Atmospheric Science Collaborations and Enriching Networks, nicknamed ASCENT, is designed to initiate positive professional relationships and eliminate the "leaky pipeline" defined by the attrition of women at different stages of their academic careers.
ASCENT will be hosted for three consecutive years. Each June, ASCENT will host a three-day workshop in Steamboat Springs. ASCENT also will provide additional networking opportunities at major national meetings, along with newsletters and on-line mentoring tools. Thirty women from universities and research facilities across the U.S. and Canada will have an opportunity to participate each year.
For more information and to apply, visit http://ascent.dri.edu. The application deadline is March 15. Applicants also may contact Gannet Hallar, director of the lab, at firstname.lastname@example.org or by calling 970-819-0968.
