The Steamboat Springs High School Knowledge Bowl team came back to within 2 points of the lead during its home meet Friday, but Middle Park pulled ahead with a winning 93 points, compared to Steamboat's 91.
One of the puzzlers the team answered correctly was a complicated math question that could not easily be figured out on paper.
After some time spent thinking, junior Aiden Rohde figured it out - the answer is 21.
"We didn't win, but we came really close," senior Sean Fairlie said.
In the last round, the team came back from 11 down to give the leaders a scare. In that round the Steamboat team scored 18, while the winning Middle Park team got 9.
Despite the narrow loss, the team's confidence remained high after the meet as they discussed the regional meet in Granby on March 6.
That meet will determine which teams attend the state competition later this year. Going into this meet, Steamboat was leading the region with 319 points to Middle Park's 210.
The team suffered a setback when senior Charlie Stoddard, described by sponsor Barb Tuchlinsky as "our math whiz," graduated in January. Despite that, the team has been performing well, she said.
