Steamboat Knowledge Bowl team leads region
The Steamboat Springs High School Knowledge Bowl team maintains a lead of more than 100 points against regional competitors after three meets. The team has scored a total of 319 points to gain first place against North Park A, at 210 points; Moffat County, at 166 points; and six other teams.
At a meet Jan. 19, a Steamboat team of Sean Fairlie, Anna Roder, Miriam Pensack, Aiden Rohde, Max Roder and Lev Tsypin took first place with 106 points. Second place went to North Park 1, with 67 points.
A Steamboat team of Fairlie, Rohde, Ryan Hogrefe and Max Roder took second place Jan. 10, losing by two points to Middle Park A, 86 to 84.
Steamboat will host a home meet beginning at 9 a.m. Friday.
Rocky Mountain Youth Corps honors local teen
Celso Cano, 16, of Steamboat Springs, received the Corpsmember of the Year award from Rocky Mountain Youth Corps and the Colorado Youth Corps Association at the annual Youth Corps Awards Ceremony on Jan. 26 in Denver.
Cano, a student at Yampa Valley High School, was recognized for his teamwork while serving as corps member in the summer.
"Celso blossomed during his time with the RMYC conservation corps program last summer. In doing so, Celso spread a bit of sunshine to his crew mates, his leader and all of us here at RMYC," said RMYC Executive Director Gretchen Van De Carr. "It is members like Celso that show us all we can do anything we want, if we just put our minds to it."
Berglund named Rotary Student of the Month
Hanna Berglund, a senior at Steamboat Springs High School, was named Rotary's Student of the Month for January 2009. Berglund is the daughter of Renee Berglund, of Steamboat Springs. She was honored at the regular Rotary meeting Jan. 20.
Berglund is among the top 10 percent of her graduating class and is the vice president of the Spanish National Honor Society. She is in Advanced Placement Calculus and Spanish and has achieved All-State Academic First Team on her three varsity sports.
Berglund's passion is soccer. She is the varsity goalie for Steamboat's team and also travels to the Front Range to play with programs in Denver and Fort Collins.
In addition to the academic and athletic activities, Berglund has had the opportunity to work with English as a Second Language students at the elementary level.
Next year, Berglund will attend Colorado College, where she plans to play soccer and major in business with a minor in Spanish. "With her competitive spirit, infinite energy and compassion for others, Steamboat Rotary is proud to recognize Hanna as Student of the Month," Rotary Student Coordinator PJ Wharton said.
