— Artists’ Gallery of Steamboat contributors Wendy Kowynia, Joseph Cosby and Adam Zabel are among the local and regional artists who will show new work during the January First Friday Artwalk.

The free event from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday highlights art and entertainment at 20 venues in downtown Steamboat Springs. A collection of new textile art by Kowynia, vivid photography by Cosby and intricate paintings by Zabel will be featured in the front room of the Artists’ Gallery during the monthly event.

Kowynia, whose textured fiber art often takes the form of multipanel hanging pieces, said she dove back into a fascination with nature to find inspiration for her new work. Rusty orange and red hues stand out as the focus of her woven hay bale re-creations.

All three featured artists are driven by what they see around them, with Kowynia taking an abstract approach, Zabel eyeing wildlife and landscape detail in his near-photographic reproductions and Cosby taking aim on a single portrait subject in his photos, Kowynia said.

In a set of local works, Zabel — who frequently favors scenes from Utah or Arizona for their warmth of color and climate — spent time with local characters and scenes, snapping photos and making sketches to use as sources for his paintings. Cosby also made a break from his normal subject matter to take on a local theme, blending a focus on international scenes with shots of Steamboat through four seasons.

Friday’s reception at Artists’ Gallery includes live music by Horse&Buggy, a folk band from Los Angeles that features Mary Jackson — whose mother, Susan Jackson, is an Artists’ Gallery contributor — along with Julie Goodson and Madison Knapp. The band’s songs are streaming at www.myspace.com/horseandbuggyandhorse andbuggy.

Retrospective mixed media works by Colorado Springs artist Troy DeRose also will be on display Friday at Artists’ Gallery. The showing is in what was once the prints room of the gallery; the space has transitioned into a guest artists showcase room.

Artists from Colorado, the Western region and elsewhere are booked on a monthly basis in the new exhibit room; the schedule for 2010 is full.
