University of Colorado skier Katie Hartman said the women’s giant slalom course at Steamboat Ski Area, laid out along the Sitz and See Me trails, was nearly perfect. She should know. She was nearly perfect, as well, and recorded the fastest times for the first and second runs. It added up to a victory on the second day of the annual Holiday Classic in Steamboat Springs.

Mistletoe (phoradendron flavenscens) is an American native plant found growing on all kinds of trees, including pine, spruce, apple and oak. After 15 years of ranching, sleigh rides, weddings and weather of all kinds, Bill and Kathy Hinder are handing over the reins to the Elk River Guest Ranch in North Routt County. The Hinders finalized the $1.4 million sale of the 35-acre ranch resort Dec. 11, to a group led by Peter Fleps, of Chicago.

Although opinions differ about how Colowyo Coal Co.’s announcement it will cut 10 percent of its staff might affect Moffat County, the mine south of Craig is intertwined with several aspects of the local, state and federal economies. Along with its personnel cuts, Colowyo plans to roughly halve its coal production for the foreseeable future.
