The number of passengers arriving at Yampa Valley Regional Airport on Thursday quadrupled from earlier in the week, with airport officials preparing to accommodate significantly more pre-holiday travelers Saturday. Direct ski season flights from Chicago, Dallas and Houston began Thursday, with 862 passengers deplaning in Hayden.

County's rate increases to 6.6% from 6.3% in October, according to new figures

The rate increased from 6.3% in October to 6.6% in November, according to figures released today by the Colorado Department of Labor and Employment. That represents 965 people without jobs. The local numbers still lag statewide unemployment rates.

After fall break, Steamboat's K. Saari jumps back into gallery business

Kimberly Saari is back in the business of putting on art events, ending an almost three-month hiatus after she closed her downtown gallery in October. Saari and her featured artists have a new primary home at Vertical Arts Architecture in Wildhorse Marketplace, where Saari has rented space on the architecture firm’s lower floor.

Country musician Kathy Mattea performs songs from her career as a heavily folk-influenced country singer and songwriter at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the Sheraton Steamboat Resort. Tickets are $40 for adults and $25 for children.

There still are opportunities to give toys, food for needy families

Holiday toy and food drives are coming to a close across Routt County, but that doesn’t mean donations aren’t still needed. The Toys for Tots drive, organized locally by Routt County United Way and the Steam­­boat Homebuilders Association, con­­­­tinues to seek donations of unused, unwrapped toys.

South Routt School District funds increase

South Routt School District’s 2009-10 fund balance puts the district in a favorable position as statewide K-12 education cuts loom, its auditors told the School Board on Thursday night. Pam Taylor, of Colorado CPA Services’ Craig office said the district’s general fund balance increased from $339,000 at the beginning of last fiscal year to $1.16 million to start this year.

Judge: Statements brothers made to detective will be allowed

A judge ruled Thursday that the statements Eduardo and David Capote made to a Steamboat Springs detective at Yampa Valley Regional Airport early this year will be allowed at the February 2010 trial of the brothers accused of playing a role in the Jan. 5 death of an Army sergeant.

Sports briefs: Alpine team, other local athletes prep for weekend

There might not be a better way for the Steamboat Springs High School Alpine team to open its season and prep for the holiday break at the same time. The Sailors host a slalom race with the first run starting at 10 a.m. today at Howelsen Hill. The second run should take place between 1 and 1:30 p.m.

9-team soccer tournament to raise money for Partners

Nick Labor and his older sister, Kelly Labor, organized a nine-team indoor soccer tournament set to kick off at 9 a.m. Saturday at Steamboat Springs High School. The idea was hatched in early November when the pair looked ahead at what had the potential to be a boring winter break.

City releases water study

Report gives capacity, cost projections for potential development

Philo Shelton said Thursday that he is confident in the city’s updated plan for $34 million worth of potential water infrastructure that would service future development west of Steamboat Springs. On Tuesday, he presented a study by McLaughlin Water Engineers, of Denver, “Water and Wastewater Master Plan Updates,” to the Steamboat Springs City Council.
