— Hayden lost Thursday in the first round of the Cowboy Shootout boys basketball tournament in Meeker, falling, 59-52, to Class 3A opponent Valley.

Despite getting 16 points from sophomore Graig Medvesk and 15 from senior Murphy Smartt, the Tigers found themselves down by three inside the final minute. Their attempts to foul and bring the game closer backfired.

“It was a pretty good game, but we had too many turnovers in the fourth quarter,” coach Mike Luppes said. “That killed us off, but overall, they’re a good ball club, and we played pretty decent.”

The team also got eight points from Ben Williams and seven from Raul Valdez.

“We played pretty well against their big kid and out rebounded them by quite a ways,” Luppes said. “But the story of the game was in the turnovers. We had a bunch, and they didn’t have very many.”

The loss, Hayden’s first of the season, drops the Tigers (1-1) into a 3 p.m. matchup today against Moffat County’s junior varsity squad.
