Previous failures at tournaments couldn't do much to damper the Steamboat Springs U-13 girls soccer team.
After going winless through several tournaments this year, Steamboat finished second during the weekend at the competitive Broomfield Soccer Tournament.
"The kids are really working on their skills," coach Jim Dudley said. "They've been playing a lot and worked on skills and teamwork."
Steamboat won its pool portion of the tournament and beat an undefeated Longmont team in the semifinals.
The team fell, 2-0, to a Colorado Rush team in the finals.
Dudley pointed out the work of Carolyn Walters and Keagan Scronek in the midfield and the defensive play of Savannah Bauknecht and Eliza Leeson as key components to the strong tournament.
Despite falling in the finals, Steamboat gave up only four goals all tournament, two of which were on penalty kicks.
"We won the first game, got excited and didn't get our hopes down," Savannah said. "We kept working really hard. We're really proud of ourselves."
Bonesaws struggle in Aspen lacrosse tournament
Fresh off a solid tournament in Breckenridge three weeks ago, the Steamboat Springs Bonesaws struggled in the Aspen Hooter's Men's Lacrosse Tournament on Saturday and Sunday.
Steamboat - without several top players - went 1-3 at the tournament.
After beating an Aspen team in its first game Saturday, Steamboat dropped three straight games.
Vail - who Steamboat has beat several times this year - won the tournament.
"It was a good time," Steamboat captain Todd Wichelhaus said. "A couple of goals in the net would have gone a long way."
In all of Steamboat's three losses, the team fell by a single goal.
The team lost to Boulder twice and to another team from Aspen.
Despite the season-ending tournament not going quite as Steamboat had hoped, Wichelhaus said overall, the season was a success.
Wichelhaus said any person with a lacrosse background interested in playing should e-mail steambaotlacrosse@yahoo.com.
