The Avett Brothers play as part of the 2009 Steamboat Springs Free Summer Concert Series and the inaugural Steamboat All Arts Festival on Thursday at the base of Steamboat Ski Area. Activities start at 5:30 p.m., and the Avetts go on at about 7 p.m.

Steamboat Springs - Aaron Nigel Smith - Strings Music Pavilion, 11 a.m.
Children's performer Aaron Nigel Smith plays educational pop songs for the little ones. Tickets for the show are sold out. Waiting list tickets might be available starting at about 10 a.m. at the Strings box office; cost is $10 for adults and $1 for children. Call 879-5056. - Open house at the Crawford house - Historic Crawford house, 4 to 6 p.m.

- Gaelic Storm - Strings Music Pavilion, 7 p.m.
Former Steamboat Springs resident and star fiddle player Jessie Burns joins the Celtic rock band Gaelic Storm for a dance-ready set of Irish rock. Tickets are $38. - Asleep at the Wheel - Ghost Ranch Saloon, 9 p.m.
Western swing and country group Asleep at the Wheel comes back through Steamboat. - Portrait-painting workshop - Steamboat Art Museum, 2 to 4 p.m.
Richard Galusha goes over the basics of painting a portrait, as part of the Steamboat Art Museum's weeklong celebration of plein air painting. The event also is part of the inaugural Steamboat All Arts Festival. FREE. Artists participating in the venue's plein air event will have work for sale during a reception from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday at the museum. A barbecue, quick draw event, silent auction and live music are from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, with tickets for $25. - Seminars at Steamboat presents Alice Rivlin - Strings Music Pavilion, 5 p.m.
Alice Rivlin was the first director of the Congressional Budget Office and now is a senior fellow at the Brookings Institution. Rivlin's seminar is titled "The Future of Capitalism." - Head for the Hills - Ghost Ranch Saloon, 9 p.m.
Fort Collins progressive bluegrass band Head for the Hills brings its updated version of traditional music through Steamboat Springs as part of a whirlwind summer tour that includes performances at bluegrass festivals across the country.
