Fire destroys hay barn

Fire crews control blaze at ranch on Routt County Road 44

Steamboat Springs Fire Rescue crews responded at about 2 p.m. to the blaze that was caused after lightning struck the 25- by 40-foot open-walled barn on the Rocking C Bar Ranch owned by Doc and Marsha Daughenbaugh.

With an accomplished faculty and a chorus bulked up by a program for aspiring career opera singers, Emerald City Opera founder and artistic director Keri Rusthoi hopes the operatic comedy "The Elixir of Love" will provide ample entertainment. The show opens Saturday at 7 p.m. at Julie Harris Theatre.

The 14th Judicial District Attorney's Office will file charges this morning against Kent Nightwalker, who admitted he shot and killed a bear July 20 near his home in downtown Steamboat Springs. District Attorney Elizabeth Oldham said Nightwalker will be charged with three misdemeanors.

About 100 firefighters and support personnel responded to the Allred Fire this week in western Moffat County. Officially, it got its name from Allred Peak, a hilltop southwest of Sand Wash Basin near the fire's origin.
