Steamboat briefs: Car stolen 2 weeks ago returned to owner Monday

— More than two weeks after it was reported stolen, Steamboat Springs Police Department officers on Monday returned a car to its rightful owner.

The 2001 silver Mazda Tribute reportedly was stolen July 17 from the first block of Seventh Street, where it was parked unlocked with the keys inside.

Officer Stuart Hutton said a stepbrother of the car's owner found it in the Sundance at Fish Creek shopping center parking lot and reported it to police. Officers said the car suffered no obvious damage, and nothing was taken from it. The keys still were inside.

Officers processed the car for evidence before returning it to the owner.

"We've been scouring parking lots, as have the people who had the vehicle taken," Hutton said.
