Wildfire
Steamboat Springs Fire Rescue firefighters fought two small brush fires Tuesday just south of Steamboat along Twentymile Road.
Routt County Crews from Steamboat Springs Fire Rescue and Routt County Emergency Management quickly extinguished two brush fires on Twentymile Road on Tuesday afternoon.
The fires were reported at about 1:20 p.m. and were about one-half mile apart on the west side of Twentymile Road, across from the Cow Creek Road turnoff. By 2:15 p.m., crews had extinguished the fires and were focusing on remaining hot spots. Firefighters told Routt County Communications dispatchers at about 3 p.m. that they were leaving the scene.
Both fires were in pastures near the road. One fire, in Elly Meyer's pasture below her house on a hillside, was about 100 yards in diameter. Meyer said that about 10 minutes after she arrived home, she got a call from her neighbor telling her that her field was on fire. Meyer said her horses were not in the pasture at the time. The fire came within 100 yards of a shed and within about 200 yards of her house. Standing outside her house watching the fire Tuesday, Meyer had her garden hose ready in case the fire blew up the hill.
It is not clear how the fire started.
The second fire, north of Meyer's land, ran along a wooden fence next to the road for about 100 yards. Flames as high as 3 feet were visible at both sites.
According to the Routt County Emergency Management Web site, there were no fire bans in effect Tuesday. County dispatchers told fire crews that there were no reported controlled burns in the area Tuesday.
Maybell fire
A fire in Maybell, about 70 miles west of Steamboat Springs in Moffat County, grew to about 3,000 acres Tuesday, according to the Northwest Colorado Fire Management Unit.
One firefighting helicopter was on scene, and 100 fire personnel were expected to respond. The fire was started Monday by lightning, officials said in a news release.
"At some point, the fire will move out of the timber and piñon and juniper trees and into lighter fuels such as brush and grass," said Fire Management Officer Mark Rogers. "When that happens, I expect to see fire behavior moderate some and give us an opportunity to get more line around the perimeter."
No structures were threatened early Tuesday.
