Steamboat Brief: Water advisory still in place for Yampa residents

Eric Berry, Yampa public works superintendent, said the town's water will not be fit for use until this evening "at the earliest," after a break in the town's main water line Monday night. Berry said a crack in a seam of the cast-iron pipe led to the leak, which is repaired, and he is working with Routt County's environmental health department to run bacteria tests on the town's water. Residents should use bottled water for drinking, food preparation, brushing teeth, making ice and most uses - and should not shower with town water - until further notice. Health officials said after the water is cleared for use, residents should run water from all fixtures in their home before use, to flush all lines of chlorine. Bottled water is available from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. today at Yampa Town Hall, 56 Lincoln St. South Routt Elementary School is closed today. For information, call Yampa Town Hall at 638-4511. For elementary school updates, call the South Routt School District at 736-2313. Call the Environmental Protection Agency's safe drinking water hot line at 1-800-426-4791.
