Marabou waters lead Golf Trout Tournament

The final tallies aren't in yet, but last week's Yampa Valley Golf Trout Tournament is expected to have raised more than $40,000 to improve stream habitats in the valley.

The proceeds of the combined two-day guided fly fishing and golf tournament go to the Yampa Valley Stream Improvement Charitable Trust, a separate 501(c)3 created by the members of the Yampa Valley Flyfishers.

The funds are used to leverage grants needed to conduct work such as the project under way at the Chuck Lewis State Wildlife Area on the Yampa River south of Steamboat.

The private waters at Marabou ranch preservation subdivision led the fishing portion of the tournament this year, producing the No. 1 and No. 3 teams in terms of most fish caught and released.

Marabou's 2.5-mile stretch of the Elk River was divided in two sections, and each section went for a record-setting amount in the auction. The two sections netted more than $15,000 for the club and stream preservation.

Twenty-five four-person teams vied for top honors, by fishing an entire day and golfing the next. The best-shot, scramble golf tournament took place Sept. 14 at Catamount.

Jeff Sussman's team purchased a section of water at Marabou. Marabou guide Will Morgan was their guide. The four-person team caught more than 200 fish Sept. 13 The largest fish was 23.5 inches.

Highmark Steamboat opens as luxury hotel

The Highmark Steamboat Springs opened last week, with its management promising an unprecedented level of luxury in this market for an all-suite hotel.

The new property, operated by Crescent Hotels & Resorts, features suites and penthouses ranging in size from 1,600 to 2,400 square feet.

"Steamboat Springs offers a wide array of lodging options, but this will be the first true luxury, all-suite hotel property in Steamboat," said Highmark General Manager Jamie McAnally. He is a Yampa Valley native from nearby Craig. McAnally has more than 15 years experience managing major ski and beach resorts.

"The Highmark is targeted to families and couples who want the same luxury they find in a five-star condominium, but who want the personal attention and services found only at a luxury hotel," he added. "The size and comfort of our suites, coupled with extraordinary attention to service, is unrivaled in Steamboat Springs and found in only a handful of hotels at any U.S. destination ski resort."

Highmark guests will receive a pre-planning call from the hotel's 24/7 concierge to arrange everything from ski rentals and private lessons to sleigh rides and restaurant reservations, and even in-suite chefs preparing specialized meals for the family. Private Cadillac Escalades provide transportation to the hotel from Yampa Valley Regional Airport, as well as to local attractions. A personal ski valet service at the resort and on the mountain handles all ski-related delivery and maintenance.

Guests can contact the hotel for reservations or additional information by calling 877-879-6555 or visit the Highmark Steamboat Springs online at www.highmarksteamboat.com.
