CreekDog wins coed tourney

The CreekDog coed soccer team beat Steamboat Medical, 1-0, on Sunday at Christian Heritage School to take home the 2008 Mountain Madness Adult Coed Soccer Tournament.

Neal Obray scored the game-winning goal halfway through the second half on a rebound shot.

Obray, normally a fullback, moved to the forward position and capitalized on a shot that careened off the Steamboat Medical goalkeeper.

"We had a couple more attempts on them but our defense was solid," said CreekDog goalkeeper Jon Rinn. "We played a heck of a game. There were a few saves I had to make, but overall, it was a good team effort."

The tournament brought teams from Steamboat, Craig, Denver, Colorado Springs, Vail, Winter Park and Breckenridge.

Steamboat Medical advanced to the finals after beating El Mexico in the semifinals. The two teams tied 1-1 in the opening game of the tournament. In the semifinals, the game went to overtime before Steamboat Medical won on penalty kicks.

In the other semifinal game, CreekDog beat Breckenridge, 3-0, to advance to the finals.

Soroco volleyball still looking for first win

Although the Soroco High School volleyball team remains winless after losing to North Park, 3-0, on Saturday, Rams coach Kim Reeves remains upbeat.

All she has to do is look at the numbers.

Against North Park, Soroco had 10-point leads in the first and third games before falling. Reeves said finishing games has been the Rams' biggest problem this year.

"I think that they're getting ahead and they just can't finish it," Reeves said. "All of us are working together to figure why that is. Looking at our stats, I can't figure out why we're losing."

Reeves said part of the problem has been too many unforced errors. While Soroco (0-6 overall, 0-2 in league play) was much better against North Park, Reeves said the unforced errors are causing a lot of the Rams' problems.

Part of that is because of inexperience, Reeves said. The Rams have only three seniors on the team and lost two girls from the varsity last week. Reeves brought up two freshmen from the junior varsity squad to fill those spots.

"The girls are working on what's working and what's not," Reeves said. "We'll figure out where we need to go and the wins are coming. This is probably one of the most talented teams I have ever coached. We just have to get over the mental drawbacks of playing volleyball."

Soroco next plays at 6:30 p.m. Friday at Vail Christian. The team then celebrates its homecoming festivities at 4:30 p.m. Saturday against Meeker.

Local athletes make 2009 US Snowboarding roster

Rosters for the 2009 U.S. Snowboarding team were released Monday, with several riders with local ties on the list.

Again making the men's Alpine A Team were Tyler Jewell and Justin Reiter. Both riders had World Cup podium finishes last year.

Zac Kay and Vic Wild - who both trained with the Steamboat Springs Winter Sports Club - made the Alpine B team. Josh Wylie made the Alpine C team.

Michelle Gorgone made the women's Alpine A team, while Erica Mueller made the women's B Team. Making the C team were former Winter Sports Club members Lindsay Lloyd and Andi Jo Stump.

The World Cup season opened Sept. 6 in Cardona, New Zealand, with men's and women's halfpipe events. Snowboardcross opened the following week in Chapelco, Argentina. Alpine opens Oct. 10 in Landgraaf, Netherlands.
