Coed soccer tourney to begin
Friday, September 12, 2008
Steamboat Springs The seventh annual Adult Coed Soccer Tournament starts at 9 a.m. Saturday and continues through Sunday.
Games primarily will be played at the Christian Heritage School fields, with some matches scheduled for the Ski Town Fields adjacent to the Tennis Center at Steamboat Springs.
Play continues all day Saturday and wraps up with semifinal games at 1 p.m. Sunday and championship games at 3 p.m. Sunday at Christian Heritage School.
In addition to four Steamboat entries, teams from Craig, Denver, Colorado Springs, Vail, Winter Park and Breckenridge are scheduled to fill out the 12-team field.
The tournament will feature the Steamboat Springs summer recreation league tournament champion El Mexico from Craig and the regular-season champion Steamboat Medical.
Tournament director Kelly Landers said most of the teams in the summer recreational league will combine forces for the tournament.
"A lot of your teams from the rec league pair up to make these super strong teams so they can compete with the teams that come up from Denver," Landers said.
Because it's a coed tournament, four women must be on the playing field at all times. Landers said people can expect to see different levels of competition. Some of the players played in high school, while others played as high as the Division I collegiate level.
"Some games might be great competition and some might be blowouts," Landers said.
Spectators are encouraged to come watch the games; admission is free. Landers also said they're looking for more women to play in the tournament.
Any women interested in playing should call Landers at 870-8283.
