— Steamboat Springs will try to withstand an avalanche of mountaineering knowledge Friday night as two of America's leading mountain men come to town to share their adventures.

Ed Viesturs, a world-class mountain climber, and Chris Davenport, the man behind The 14er Project, will speak at 6:30 p.m. Friday at the Steamboat Springs Community Center, 1605 Lincoln Ave. Their presentation is called "To the Top and Beyond."

Viesturs has climbed the world's 14 highest mountains without the help of supplemental oxygen - a task that took him 16 years - and has ascended Mount Everest six times. Davenport, an Aspen resident, has summited and skied each of Colorado's 54 14,000-foot peaks.

Tickets for the event are $15 and are available at Epilogue Book Co. at 837 Lincoln Ave. Money collected at the event will be donated to Everything Outdoor Steamboat, an outdoor education program for area middle school students.

Hayden volleyball surpasses North Park

The Hayden volleyball team continued its strong start to the season Tuesday in Walden, slipping past North Park in a four-game match.

The Tigers, now 6-1, lost the chance at a three-game shutout after they couldn't hold onto a big third-game lead. But they rebounded and won the match, 25-23, 25-16, 23-25, 25-23.

"Every game so far, we've been getting a little better," Hayden coach Greg Johnson said. "That's our goal - we want to get better every game until districts, then put it all together."

Strong performances from sophomore Rachael Koehler and senior Holli Salazar helped everything come together against North Park.

Koehler was strong at the net with seven blocks and seven kills, and Salazar shined at the serving line, racking up seven aces in addition to her six kills and 10 digs.

The Tigers turn right around this weekend for a pair of home matches. Hayden welcomes a squad from Baggs, Wyo., on Friday and Vail Christian on Saturday.

"We need to keep working to improve our blocks and continue the process of running a quick and effective offense," Johnson said.

DeLine earns weekly athletic recognitions

Colorado State University freshman kicker Ben DeLine picked up a pair of awards for his work in Saturday's game against Sacramento State.

DeLine, a 2008 Steamboat Springs High School graduate, was named one of three Lou Groza National Collegiate Place Kicker Award "Stars of the Week." He also was named Mountain West Conference Special Teams Player of the Week.

DeLine hit the game-tying and game-winning field goals in the final 90 seconds to help Colorado State to a 23-20 win against Sacramento State. In the game, DeLine was 3-of-3 in field goal attempts, all in the fourth quarter, and hit both of his extra point tries.
