— As each game passes, Steamboat Springs High School softball coach Dan Swanson sees something new he likes.

While the team still is a ways away from competing in the league - evident by Basalt's 20-0 win Tuesday - Swanson said the team has progressed in each game.

"I'm seeing a lot more snap from the catchers throwing it down there," Swanson said. "I'm seeing the girls cover the bases most of the time and our defense is coming along."

After a four-run first inning, Basalt did most of its damage in the top half of the second. Thanks to several hits and some Steamboat struggles in the field, Basalt put up a 10-spot to take a 14-0 lead.

The Sailors had their best chance in the bottom half of the second. Senior Darcy Hornstein reached on a walk, stole second base and advanced to third on a passed ball. But with one out, Steamboat came up empty after a fielder's choice and a strikeout. Basalt pushed across six more runs in the top of the third and had a 1-2-3 inning in the bottom half of the frame to win.

"Darcy pitched a complete game and that's the first time that's happened all year. So it's coming along," Swanson said. "We're getting on base, and we've been real aggressive on the base paths."

Despite the loss, Swanson said he sees hope in this weekend's doubleheader against Eagle Valley.

The first game starts at 11 a.m. Saturday at Howelsen Hill.

Swanson said he was able to watch Eagle Valley last week at a tournament and said that he expects Steamboat to compete and possibly come away with a win.

He said the focus for the rest of the week will be on hitting and continuing to work on defense.

"I think they're a team that's beatable for us," Swanson said. "I'm looking for a close game if not a win out of it. The big thing is we're giving up too many runs. In the past, it's been walks, but (Tuesday) it was hits. : If we can keep (Eagle Valley) from running and keep it close, I think we have a chance."
