From the Thursday, Sept. 4, 1958, edition of The Steamboat Pilot:

There is every indication the annual Routt County Fair and Rodeo at Hayden on Sept. 12 and 13 will be the most successful in the long history of the event.

Exhibits are expected to be in greater profusion than ever before, and the rodeo and racing program will be spectacular.

Cash prizes and ribbons are awarded in many classifications for livestock, grains, grasses, garden produce, flowers and handiwork. Secretary George Simonton says there is great interest in this part of the fair and that the exhibits should be one of the big attractions.

George Cook is in charge of the rodeo and racing program. He has held the job for many years and is able to line up the best competitors in the great western sport.

It is going to be a great fair and it is one that no resident of Routt County should miss.

Rainfall this summer

lowest in 19 years

There was less precipitation this year than any four summer months since 1939, Wayne Light, co-operative weather observer, reported this week.

Precipitation for May, June, July and August was 3.75 inches. In 1939, the precipitation was 3.53 inches in the same period.

The records show that in 1892, the precipitation was only 3.10 inches and in 1894 it was 2.47 inches. ... . Some doubt is expressed as to the accuracy of the early day figures.

Enrollment in grade school at all time high

A record enrollment of almost 400 students started their first full day at the grade school Tuesday, with 91 first-graders comprising the biggest single class in all Steamboat schools.

The first grade is large enough to be divided into three classrooms. The total enrollment is 48 more than last year. In addition, there are more than 50 kindergartners attending half-day sessions at the junior high building.

Principal Clarence Gardner attributed the unexpectedly high enrollment to the advent of many new families to the Steamboat springs area.

Gov. Steve McNichols will speak here Wednesday

Gov. Steve McNichols will be in Steamboat Springs next Wednesday night and speak at the courthouse. Everyone is invited to the meeting to hear a discussion of state problems.

We believe it will be an informative session and one worth attending, no matter what your political faith. Colorado's vigorous young governor is completing a two-year term as chief executive and now seeks a four-year term in office.

He has decided views as to aiding education, improving the state correctional and penal institutions, building a better highway system and has instituted a thorough study of the taxation system. It is his belief that taxes are not distributed equally and there should be a revision of the manner in which tax money is levied.
