Guest commentary: Economic performance vs. economic promises

When it comes to the economy, presidential candidates, Democrats and Republicans alike, say many things. Once in office, however, campaign rhetoric often gives way to the reality of governing. George H.W. Bush famously asked voters to read his lips, "no new taxes." Taxes instead went up during his term. Franklin Roosevelt campaigned in 1932 on a pledge to balance the federal budget. Post-election, that pledge also was forgotten.

Thanks to veterans: Robert L. Simillion

As a former resident of Steamboat Springs, I would like to pay tribute to the members of the VFW and American Legion Military Memorial Services Team. The members are all veterans of the U.S. military and have spent many hours of volunteer time training and perfecting the memorial services for deceased servicemen and servicewomen. In a recent opinion piece ("Udall's U-turn on domestic drilling," Aug. 31 Steamboat Pilot & Today), former Republican state legislator Mark Hillman accused me of hypocrisy because, as a long-time advocate of renewable energy, I support a bipartisan energy proposal that includes investments in solar, wind and renewable energy but also adds domestic drilling.

Nancy B. Kramer: Local food trust formed

The "What's in Our Foodshed: Examining the demand and potential of growing product for the local marketplace forum" in March was a huge success. The enthusiasm, concepts and project ideas were plentiful. A small group of dedicated individuals who attended the forum have been meeting and have established an organization to help advance ideas and concepts brought forward at the forum. With the assistance of the Northwest Colorado Products Program and the Community Agriculture Alliance, Deep Roots of Northwest Colorado Local Food Trust now exists.

Todd Hagenbuch: Not quiet in HD 57

"Our View" in the Aug. 17 edition of the Steamboat Pilot & Today hit a nerve and the nail on the head. As I read the Editorial Board's view of the House District 57 race, I realized that, as a candidate, perhaps I have been too quiet as I campaign for one of Colorado's most important state races. In today's world of constant TV ads, e-mail blasts, robo-calls and newspaper commentary, those of us who simply are talking to voters about their personal issues and how we can help, can get overlooked. Big-dollar campaigns are now more common than big-idea campaigns.
