Kat Kelly: Support Howelsen

— If we all skied Howelsen Hill one or two weekends a month this season, I think we might have a good chance of saving this historic area of our town from budget cuts.

My kids learned to ski there, and say the trails on Howelsen are better and harder than on the mountain. My youngest even stated that the blue trails at Howelsen are like the black trails on Mount Werner.

If we lose Howelsen because of the economy, to me it would be a tragedy and seem very backwards. Howelsen is closer, more affordable, and easier to get to than the mountain.

If there is a time that you don't go to the mountain because it is a massive crowd weekend, go to Howelsen. Howelsen is also a great place to get some runs in during your lunch break.

Wouldn't you miss the jumping events and Winter Carnival events, Winter Sports Club? Don't forget, there are always other casualties and a huge domino effect to every casualty of financial wars. To every action there is an equal and opposite reaction.

Hope to see you all at Howelsen this season.

Excellent points, I will take my family over a couple of times and invite others along. It would be a very shortsighted move to close Howelsen Hill and have broader economic impacts. Thank you for your letter.

Great points Kat! Let me add another point. Currently the City is looking at cutting back operating hours, so they might not even be open for lunch. Most of what the city does at Howelsen is 4 SSWSC, maybe we should shift that focus to do more for us.

I'm in. It's been a few years since I've skied Howelson. If my memory serves me correctly they used to have some kind of deal where you could ski for a couple of hours and have lunch for a very reasonable price. Maybe they need to offer something like two hours and a tuna sandwich for ten bucks. Plus on a powder day you can have the mountain to yourself.

The oldest winter sports club west of the mississippi. I think it is worth saving.....
