Logos representing Steamboat Springs and Hayden are set to join Craig's symbol on the side of an airport wall.
The Routt County Board of Commissioners approved the design and installation Tuesday for each painting at Yampa Valley Regional Airport in Hayden. The murals will be funded by the entities and the county will incur no cost, documents presented to the commissioners stated.
Craig's logo already appears on the outside wall, which is visible as people approach the terminal from the west. The idea always has been to include the three municipalities, YVRA Manager Dave Ruppel said. The Airport Commission came up with the idea, he said.
"We were trying to think what we could do with that big ugly wall, and we decided to do some murals and have some representation from the towns up there," Ruppel said.
He said the Steamboat Springs logo already was in the works. The Hayden symbol might not arrive for a while, however, said Eva Gibbon, president of the Hayden Chamber of Commerce.
"We just had a meeting last night, and because we've got so many other things in the frying pan, we decided to postpone that," Gibbon said Tuesday.
Hayden plans to use its centennial logo. Steamboat's mural will be the city's spur and snowflake seal.
Ruppel said he would like to see more locally focused artwork at YVRA. He is interested in working with youths to create a big, flowing mural that features scenes from local life and culture.
"We're hoping we could get some involvement from the local art classes and the schools," he said. "That'll be for next year, maybe."
