Arellano goes 1-2 at tourney

Steamboat Springs — Former Steamboat Springs resident Cris Arellano lost in the third round at the U.S. Amateur Pool Championships in Atlanta.
The former chief probation officer finished 1-2 in the 128-player tournament, which was played Nov. 7 through 9.
"It's very, very competitive," Arellano said. "There are a lot of young people now playing pool. It's just a different level of playing."
Arellano lost in the first round, 7-2, won in the second round, 7-4, and lost in the third round, 7-4.
Arellano - who qualified for the tournament in 1999 and 2005 when he finished 23rd - said the biggest difference along with the quality of players was the table.
Whereas in most social settings the tables are five feet long, tournament play brings in nine-foot tables.
The format is broken down into five games of 8-ball and eight games of 9-ball in a race to seven. This means a person could win seven straight 9-ball games before playing any 8-ball games.
"It's fun going to nationals," Arellano said. "You know it's a different level. You know you have to shoot some good pool. If you make a mistake, people will run the table on you. For me it's always been something I strive for and enjoy. You don't have to depend on anybody else but you."
