Four members of the Steamboat Springs girls tennis team and a Steamboat swimmer highlighted The Denver Post's All-State team.

Local boys tennis

players perform well

Although the start to the Steamboat Springs boys tennis team's season still is more than two months away, many members are getting a head start.

Sophomore Jeff Lambart won a 16-and-under singles tournament in Fort Collins last weekend, beating freshman Mirko Erspamer.

Erspamer and eighth-grader Max Roder won the doubles title, while Zac Valicenti, despite not placing, played well throughout.

On the girls side, Christi Valicenti won a singles title in Fort Collins.

"I'm just really proud of these young players. They're out there playing and competing well," coach Don Toy said. "That's how you get better."

Eighth-grader Jamey Swiggart finished second in singles at the 14-and-under Intermountain Championships in Salt Lake City during the Memorial Day weekend. Swiggart lost, 7-6, 7-4, 6-2, in the finals.

He also finished runner-up in the doubles.
