Volunteers plan mission week

Congregational church to work in Steamboat, Craig and Hayden

Instead of shipping off out of town, Hayden Congregational United Church of Christ members will work across Routt County next month.

Volunteers plan to get involved in events from Steamboat Springs to Craig during their weeklong mission, which starts Monday.

"We've been going to New Orleans for a couple of years and working down there," church pastor Janet Babish said. "But the idea they try to tell us is to take that back home, take that spirit there."

They plan to work Monday and Tuesday at a Habitat for Humanity house under construction in Steamboat Springs. The volunteers will then help at Love INC of the Yampa Valley in Craig. They'll finish up by tending to their own church.

Volunteers also will do food and personal item drives for LIFT-UP of Routt County, Love INC and the food bank in Hayden.

The mission week lasts through June 7.

"We would take any help anybody would like to do, and they can call the church if they want more information," Babish said. Hayden Congregational can be reached at 276-3510. The church is at 202 E. Jefferson Ave.

Volunteers will do various odd jobs, including organizing and repairing furniture in Craig and tending to the neglected garden at the church in Hayden, Babish said.

"We're going to gather every morning for breakfast, so some people are going to be providing that," she said. "We'll have a lot of behind-the-scenes people, too."

The group is planning a cookout after its worship service June 8, Babish said. The children's choir, which includes youths up to third or fourth grade, will then sing at the Haven Assisted Living Center, she said.

"They're mostly preschoolers and younger elementary," Babish said. "So they're awfully cute, as you can imagine."
