Hayden hosted the Yampa Valley Soap Box Derby on Saturday on Crandall Avenue. John Mertz organized this year's race. There was no Yampa Valley competition last year, and the event was in Oak Creek and Steamboat Springs before that.
Morgan Mertz was this year's champion. The five-year veteran will go on to compete this summer at nationals in Akron, Ohio.
"Considering more than half the field was rookie drivers, they did great," Morgan said in a news release. "I did not leave anything to chance, particularly when I was facing Errol (Ormesher) in the finals, he had a 0.2952 second lead over me in the final run, so I just kept saying to myself 0.30, 0.30, 0.30 the whole way down the track, because I knew I had to run dead straight and beat him by at least 0.30 seconds. It worked, and I won."
Ormesher came in second, and Connor Kunst took third.
American Legion Post 89 in Hayden sponsored the event with the Town Board and other donors.
