Blown transformer blacks out Steamboat

Power outage total; residents report huge flash of light

— A power transformer blew at the mountain substation near Walton Creek Road and U.S. Highway 40 late Sunday, sending a flash of bright light into the nighttime sky and knocking out power to much of Routt County.

A Yampa Valley Electric Association spokesman at the substation said an animal got into equipment and caused damages that led to the massive outage, which occurred at about 10 p.m. Sunday. The outage caused a brief fire at the station that was quickly extinguished.

Power was restored to some downtown areas by about 11 p.m.

The outage left the entire city dark on the eve of Memorial Day. Flashes in the sky from the outage could be seen from as far west as Milner.

YVEA crews are working to restore power to the entire service area. Steamboatpilot.com will provide additional updates as they become available.

great job YVEA, I witnessed the transformer blowing up. Did not think we would have power for hours.

I mean from steamboat II, the blue lights looked terrible. I thought it was coming from behind the mountains.

I do have too say at least was in a very handy place next too the fire station. Had a perfect view from where I was but was way too bright too look at it for long. Nice job in putting it out, bet it was a surprise too them too walk out their door onto that and thanks for fixing the power so fast normally takes way longer.

i was half a mile away when this happened, and, i gotta say, it was one of the most terrifying things i've ever seen. just to suddenly see the sky flash with white and bluish light, i just thought something terrible like aliens or nukes. it was so scary, no joke.
