Pueblo Soroco High School sophomore Alex Estes is the third-best long jumper in Class 2A.
Estes finished third in the event Friday morning at the 2A state track meet in Pueblo, with a jump of 20 feet, 4 inches. That jump is two inches short of the school-record jump of 20 feet, 6 inches Estes accomplished at the regional meet May 9 in Grand Junction - after only four days of long jump practice this season.
Hayden High School sophomore Jake Walker finished fifth in the long jump with a leap of 20 feet, 1 ¾ inches. Walker also raced in the 100-meter dash Friday and placed fifth in preliminary heats with a time of 11.4 seconds, good enough to advance to the finals at 11:25 a.m. Saturday.
Soroco's girls sprint medley relay team also advanced to finals tomorrow morning. Tatum Lombardi, Glenda Long, Traci Schlegel and Sarajane Rossi qualified with a sixth-place finish in preliminary heats, with a time of 1 minute, 55.14 seconds.
But Soroco's 800-meter relay team, which had high hopes coming into the state meet as the third-ranked team in the class, was not so fortunate. A runner fell during a handoff, leading to a dropped baton. The team with the same runners as the spring medley - finished the race and even beat at least one other team, but did not advance to tomorrow's finals.
Hayden's 3,200-meter medley relay team of Delanie Vedepo, Laura Zirkle, Krista Tomke and Calla Manzanares finished 12th with a time of 10 minutes, 58.53 seconds.
Friday afternoon's events include the girls 400-meter dash for Rossi, 300-meter hurdles for Schlegel and a 1,600-meter relay for Rams racers Lombardi, Schlegel, Rossi and Katie Grett.
