Cause of power outages unclear

West Steamboat, downtown impacted

— Multiple power outages Tuesday morning have left some Yampa Valley Electric Association customers without power and blacked out traffic lights in the west Steamboat Springs area, including the light at the busy intersection of U.S. Highway 40 and Elk River Road. YVEA spokesman Jim Chappell was out of town and unavailable for comment. Press inquiries were referred to Paul Vaillancourt, who has not yet returned a phone message seeking comment. The outages seemed to affect west Steamboat in particular, but outages were also reported in downtown Steamboat late Tuesday morning.

Strawberry Park Elementary School was also without power as of noon Tuesday.

Power has been restored in at least some areas, but it is unclear whether all outages have been resolved.

i love living here with the buried utilities. the power goes out so rarely that when it does, it warrants an article in the paper.

the town where i went to college experienced short power outages and brown outs usually several times a week. the power would mostly just flicker off and then come right back on, but sometimes it would stay off for hours. it was really annoying having to set all your clocks multiple times every week. it happened so often that it definitely never made the paper.

Outages are rare around here these days. I do remember when I first moved here how frequent the power used to go out. It was a couple of times a week at least if not more during high winds and heavy snow. I just thought it was part of living in a rural area and bought surge protectors for my expensive electronics. Things are much better now and all the work that has gone into burying utility lines makes for less frequent outages.
