Horizons seeks summer volunteers

Steamboat Springs Horizons Specialized Services, which provides services and animal-related therapy for people who have developmental disabilities, is in need of volunteers to help with summer events and programs. Activities include boating at Stagecoach Reservoir, swimming at Old Town Hot Springs, Special Olympics in Craig and Greeley, Steamboat Marathon, Family Fun Fest and ongoing one-on-one mentoring. United Way seeks Day of Caring volunteers
Routt County United Way's 12th annual Day of Caring is May 21. Projects and volunteers are needed for the event, which facilitates service activities throughout the community. Individuals or teams are welcome to volunteer. Call Routt County United Way at 879-5605.
Summer sports application deadline today
Today is the registration deadline for adult softball and adult soccer summer leagues hosted by the city of Steamboat Springs Parks, Open Space and Recreational Services Department. All teams who intend to play this summer must have all fees submitted to the department's office, at 245 Howelsen Parkway, by 5 p.m. Call Kit Rice at 879-4300.
Routt County PDR application deadline today
Today is the application deadline for Routt County's Purchase of Development Rights Program, for this year's round of grants. The program compensates landowners with cash for putting their property under conservation easements. Interested property owners should contact the Yampa Valley Land Trust at 879-7240 or Helena Bond in the Routt County Board of Commissioners office at 879-0108.
Pilot Editorial Board seeking new members
The Steamboat Pilot & Today is accepting letters of interest from readers who would like to serve as community representatives on the newspaper's Editorial Board from May 1 through Aug. 31.
The Editorial Board includes two community representatives and four members of the newspaper staff. Newspaper staff members on the board are Publisher Bryna Larsen, Editor Brent Boyer, City Editor Mike Lawrence and reporter Tom Ross. The Editorial Board formulates the Our View opinions expressed on the ViewPoints page of the newspaper. The Editorial Board meets at 10 a.m. Tuesdays.
Readers interested in serving on the Editorial Board should send a letter of 500 words or less expressing their interest to Boyer at bboyer@steamboatpilot.com or P.O. Box 774827, Steamboat Springs, CO 80477. Letters also may be dropped off at the Pilot & Today office at 1901 Curve Plaza. Call Boyer at 871-4221 with questions.
Food assistance available through LIFT-UP
The LIFT-UP of Routt County offices in Hayden, Oak Creek and Steamboat Springs are distributing USDA commodities for the second quarter of 2008 through the federal Emergency Food Assistance Program. Each eligible household may receive food from the program once per quarter. The quarterly distribution ends June 30. Call 870-8804, from 1 to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday, to inquire about income eligibility and hours of operation for each office.
