Sports briefs for March 24


Steamboat Springs Winter Sports Club skiers Shane McLean and Taylor Coe each finished first in the giant slalom at Friday's Colorado Junior Ski Cup Championships in Telluride.

Winter Sports Club athletes swept the men's giant slalom podium. Coe earned his second win in as many days with a first-place time of 1 minute, 37.76 seconds. Coe's teammate, Ryan McConnell, was second in 1:38.74. Hig Roberts rounded out the Steamboat sweep, only one-tenth of a second behind McConnell and a time of 1:38.84.

For the women, McLean was the winner by 2.69 seconds with a time of 1:44.17. Ciera Glen was second in 1:46.86.

Area skiers place at Telemark World Cup

Five Steamboat skiers found success at the Telemark Skiing World Cup at the Sugarbush Ski Resort in Warren, Vt.

Lauren Paley had a sixth-place finish; two seventh-place finishes, and one ninth-place finish during the five-day event.

Shane Anderson's best day was Friday in the men's classic, when he finished 12th. He also finished 13th, 14th and 17th in other races during the week.

Ben Paley's best finish came Tuesday, when he was 19th. He also finished 20th, 21st and 23rd in other races.

Ken Recker was 22nd Friday in the men's classic and also finished 25th and 34th.

Erika Walters was ninth in Friday's Women's Classic.

Samantha Stamp gets on podium

Steamboat Springs skier Samantha Stamp was third in the weekend's giant slalom J4 Rocky/Central Junior Olympics at Winter Park.

Stamp finished her run in 1 minute, 1.82 seconds, less than a second behind Julia Mueller-Ristine of the Aspen Valley Ski/Snowboard Club, who finished first.
