Blackberry Lane fire deemed accidental

Steamboat Springs fire officials have determined last month's presumed electrical fire on Blackberry Lane was accidental and was caused by the inappropriate installation of heat tape.

Steamboat Springs Fire Rescue responded to the fire shortly after 5 a.m. Feb. 27. According to fire officials, the homeowners had extinguished the blaze with a fire extinguisher before fire crews arrived. The fire caused almost $8,000 in damage, primarily to the exterior of the home, according to a Fire Rescue news release. No one was injured.

The probable cause of the fire was heat tape that was laid on top of wood mounts for a satellite dish, causing it to short out and overheat, igniting the exterior wall of the home, according to the news release.
