Community Foundation announces grants

The Yampa Valley Community Foundation has announced two local grant opportunities: The Yampa Valley Community Foundation's Community Grants and the Steamboat Ski and Resort Corporation Recreation Fund. The community grants are available for any nonprofit activity in Routt or Moffat counties that involves the environment, education, health and human services, recreation or art and culture. The Ski Corp. Recreation Fund serves recreation projects in Routt County.

In 2007, community grants awarded $124,000 to local nonprofit organizations. The Ski Corp. fund will be funded in 2008 with a $75,000 contribution from Ski Corp. A full copy of the guidelines for each grant is available at The deadline for submitting proposals to the Yampa Valley Community Foundation is March 17. Recipients of community grants will be announced June 2, and recipients of Ski Corp. funds will be announced June 15. Contact the Yampa Valley Community Foundation at 879-8632.

Energy assistance available for those in need

The Routt County Department of Human Services is accepting applications for its Low Income Energy Assistance Program, or LEAP, through April 30. LEAP is a federally funded program designed to help low-income households meet their winter home heating costs; it does not pay the entire cost of home heating.

Household income may not exceed 185 percent of the federal poverty guidelines. The maximum monthly income for a one-person household is $1,574.
