Steamboat briefs for March 5

Benefit raises more than $13,000 for Nelson family

— A Sunday fundraiser at The Tennis Center at Steamboat Springs raised more than $13,000 for the family of Randall Nelson, a Steamboat Springs High School student who earlier this year was found not guilty of assault charges stemming from a racially charged February 2007 incident that left another boy with a broken jaw. The family has incurred more than $40,000 in legal bills and expenses related to the case.

Free preschool offered to qualifying children

Applications are now accepted for the 2008-09 school year of the Colorado Preschool and Kindergarten Program, which offers free preschool sessions to children who meet certain qualifying factors that could interfere with their learning. Eligible children must be 3 years old by Sept. 1. Applications are available at the Child Development Center on Eighth and Aspen streets, and are due Monday. Call Lori at 879-0391, ext. 310, with questions.

The benefit worked and money was raised. The Randal family still needs our help.

Now is the time for the rest of Steamboat to do their part.

Everyone of us who has ever felt the sting of a racial slur needs to show their support.
