Steamboat Springs A 19-year-old man was seriously injured Monday afternoon after he was hit by a truck while riding a bicycle across Lincoln Avenue at 13th Street in downtown Steamboat Springs.
The man, Matthew Tello, was taken to Yampa Valley Medical Center. His condition was unknown as of press time Monday night.
Steamboat Springs police Sgt. Gerard Geis said the collision occurred in the far north westbound lane of Lincoln Avenue just before 4 p.m.
According to witnesses, Geis said, Tello was riding his bicycle through a red light. The pickup had a green light when it began to move forward. Tello was not wearing a helmet, Geis said. He landed 23 feet from the point of impact.
"From witness statements, the bike was coming north on 13th across Lincoln, and the truck came forward from a stop and hit it," Geis said.
The accident snarled traffic along the road from about 4 to 4:45 p.m.
"We're going to finish the investigation, but at this point it looks to us like the primary fault falls on the bicyclist," Geis said.
Conor Barrett said he saw the collision. He said he was driving in the center westbound lane on Lincoln.
"If I was in that guy's spot, I would have hit him, too," Barrett said of the driver and the bicyclist. "There's no way he could have seen him. : I mean, it's a shame."
