— A bouncy house, giant slide, inflatable obstacle course and a cowboy on stilts will be on hand today for the second annual Free Family Fun Fest.

The event, co-sponsored by NRC Broadcasting and Planet Powersports, invites families to enjoy a carnival atmosphere from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Colorado Mountain College's Alpine Campus in Steamboat Springs.

"It's expensive living in Steamboat, so we're just trying to do something fun for the entire community," said event organizer Lee Smith of NRC Broadcasting. The day of festivities drew about 1,500 people in its first year, and Smith said she's hoping for a turnout close to 2,000 today.

Smith and KFMU Promotions Director Eli Campbell came up with the idea for the festival after seeing a similar event in Avon.

"We just kind of realized that there's not something that goes on like this for the community in Steamboat right now, but there's a strong need for it," Smith said. "Last year, we only expected about 800 people and got 1,500. So, the turnout was really strong, and we found out that the need we thought was there, really was there."

Todd Brehmer, a sales manager at Planet Powersports, said the store decided to get involved with the Fun Fest this year as part of its focus on family entertainment. Planet Powersports will host tricycle races and have a display of scooters, minibikes and four-wheelers.

"Because motorcycling and four-wheeling is a family event, it's just good exposure," Brehmer said. "We try to start everybody out young, and in general, it's a good program that they're doing up there."

Along with activities such as Dance Dance Revolution, three-legged races and face painting, the festival also features food booths from McDonald's, Bagel Works and Dippin' Dots.

Smith encourages families to walk, bike or take the bus to the event, as CMC has limited parking.
