The third annual Cayuse Classic is June 21 at Sidney Peak Ranch. This family event celebrates the western heritage our valley treasures while raising funds for the Community Agriculture Alliance. Whether you participate, observe or just stop by for some barbecue and festivities, this event holds something for everyone.
The day will begin with a hunter/jumper show in the outdoor arena at Sidney Peak. Anyone who wants to show their horses in the hunter division, jumper division, pleasure division or all three is welcome. If you just want to come see what this exciting, colorful event is all about, the classes start at 9 a.m. and should wrap up about 2 p.m. This is a fun event for participants and spectators and a wonderful way to spend a Saturday.
For the more adventurous riders, there is a Pair Pace Cross Country competition on Sidney Peak's cross-country course. This event starts at 2 p.m. and features horse and rider teams galloping in the fields, jumping over more natural obstacles. The fastest pair wins. Spectators can hike a short distance through the scenic valley floor, or there will be some motorized transportation available, as well.
For the western enthusiast, the ranch horse versatility competition is the ticket. Bring your horses out to test their skills in ranch work. The competition starts at 11 a.m. at Whispering Willows Ranch and includes dry work (trail course), reining and cow work. There will be two divisions for adults and youths. If you aren't sure you are ready for the competition, come on over and watch these horse and rider teams demonstrate their skill and speed.
The event showcases local equestrian stars at the "Winners Showcase" held in the outdoor arena at Sidney Peak. This exhibition starts at 3:30 p.m. and will include carriage obstacle courses, reining patterns, dressage and a training segment by Jason Patrick of Whispering Willows Ranch.
The evening culminates in a Western barbecue and benefit auction. Locals and guests will experience the friendliness of our valley and the commitment to preserving agriculture and our Western heritage. Some of the live auction items include an aerial ranch photo shoot, a National Finals Rodeo package and a private waters fishing trip.
