Steamboat Springs Four candidates remain in the running to become the new superintendent of the South Routt School District.
The district is looking to replace outgoing Superintendent Kelly Reed, who has taken a job as a middle school principal in Grand Junction.
Among those still being considered for the position are two local figures - former Hayden Superintendent Scott Mader and former Steamboat Springs High School Principal Dave Schmid.
The other two candidates also hail from Colorado: Dan Schmidt, the superintendent and principal in Idalia, and Kevin Chalfant, a high school principal in Peyton.
Mader was superintendent of Hayden schools from 1998 to 2004 before moving to Denver, where he worked in the Colorado Department of Education for one year before becoming principal of The New America School.
Schmid resigned as the high school principal in Steamboat at the end of the 2004-05 school year after holding the position for 10 years. Since then, he has worked as a national educational consultant and substitute teacher in the Steamboat Springs School District.
The four finalists were selected from a pool of six applicants, said Jane Toothaker, the search facilitator.
Each candidate has been assigned a day, from June 9 to 16, to visit the district. They will be interviewed by the district search committee and the South Routt School Board.
The search committee will present its final selection to the board June 23.
"They want to do a good and comprehensive process, but they also want to move along quickly," Toothaker said.
Reed's term ends June 30, and the search committee would like the new superintendent to start at that time, she said.
