Michael Malone: Game disgusting

— The news is filled with stories about tornadoes, floods, wildfires, earthquakes, hurricanes, cyclones and tsunamis - just a few natural disasters that can change our lives and take our lives. Imagine that we could prevent these catastrophes simply by not allowing them to take place.

Now imagine a manmade disaster just as devastating that we can prevent. It's a video game, and it goes by the name "Grand Theft Auto 4," or "GTA 4." It's a sad day for our world that this disgusting disease exists. It is especially bad for Steamboat Springs when two people like Chip and Jonothan Carter are allowed a public forum in Four Points to praise the virtues (rather, the lack thereof) of this garbage.

"Crime, violence, and debauchery," "wreaking havoc at will," and "first clearly human character in a game."

How sad. They could "spend an entire day (doing this) and be completely satisfied." How satisfied would these two men be when they are the target of someone "blasting away with a sub-machine gun." Or, even worse, when their son is the one "accomplishing missions" because of their acceptance, tolerance and endorsement of such a vile video game.

It has no place in our community and shouldn't be allowed in your newspaper.

Ah Yes. You have to love the world of video games! I've been a gamer since "Pong" in 1972. The evolution of video games has propelled us into the mind of fantasy situations without having to face the physical reality of those escapades experienced in true life. It is the demented ideas that are presented in video games that are somehow brought to the forefront of reality in situations like Columbine H.S. by a few mentally deranged boys that we're driven to insanity by the very "sane" and "bullying" peers of their school! To say that a video game inspired such action is complete bullsh!t! That video game that was quoted by Harris and Kleebold was called "DOOM" by the way, "NOT" Grand Theft Auto! I like being a gamer and have watched my children grow and play video games however; I censored the content and would NEVER let them play GTA until they were age 18. Video games were only an indoor source of limited recreation in our home! I encouraged participation in sports and reading as much as possible. Censorship is still a good thing and the release of games such as these are only for the mature gamer! In our moral degeneration of this world, we produce things much to the image of the free society to which we live by illustrating the bloated deplorable acts, by producing them in video games and movies. That is what sells! That is what makes money! Fantasy! Every year we try to out do ourselves in the "shock and awe" we can produce to create unthinkable situations on the silver screen and TV however, we are selling out a "minute few" that may not be able to handle anything, other that the truth and they are the ones that are dangerous! They are the few mentally unstable who cannot see the differences. In turn, the many that are blessed with being mentally balanced are discriminated against because of the few who can't handle these things or are we really the ones whom are mentally unstable for viewing such things? Maybe what it really comes to is being careless! America is a nation of carelessness in our rebel attitude! We were founded on that very pretense! We just have evolved to a more hybrid mutant degeneration of it and it shows in our movies, videos, TV and radio. Until then, happy gaming! Have a good day!

You are dead wrong, sir. Grand Theft Auto IV is rated M for MATURE, which means you cannot even buy it unless you are 17. There are movies that are far far worse than this game. Just because you can play it does not make it worse. Get with the times and do your research before you go bashing games you don't know anything about.

brianj994:

Thanks for the clarification. I'm sure there's nobody under the age of 17 playing GTA IV, because of its M rating. All the teenagers I see/smell smoking weed on the gondola must surely be a figment of my imagination, because of the applicible statutes prohibiting them from doing so.

You've completely missed the point of Mr. Malone's letter, with all due respect.

Joe thinks Malone should mind his own business, parents need to be the ones deciding what games their children play. If you have raised children with a certain level of morals, you shouldn't have to be worried about what games they play.

Is this all Malone has to be worried about, a game ?

Let him monitor his own children [Joe's sure he doesn't let them watch the news or practically any prime time television, considering his views], and we'll monitor ours.

Joe wonders why the Pilot would even waste space on a letter like this, couldn't they have sold the space to yet another real estate company, as is their typical wont ?

Yes, yes, and back in the 80's Heavy Metal promoted satanic worship. It's a wonder that Satanism isn't the fastest growing religion right now due to that.

Videos games are just the newest excuse for inactive parenting. It allows people like that to lay the blame somewhere else.

Weed smoking is not just for teens.

In fact, I encourage more adults to burn.

ESPECIALLY ... on the gondola.

Peace, love, dope.

I find it more disgusting that so many parents are not aware of what their children are watching/playing until it becomes a "social" issue.
Blog- I went for the mentos...... perhaps we should start yet another support group.

Sex and the city. People paid good money to watch the women with loose morals run around town. Unfortunately, not every woman can be like mrs dugger, 18 children all within wedlock. GTA is more of a novelty cartoon. Going to IRAQ causes more social damage than a cartoon, Thanks GWB

Raise your children.

Don't let TV do it. It is not the same programming all us boomers got from Captain Kangaroo and Bozo the Clown. Five year olds will not opt for Mr. Rogers when they can flip over to Kill Bill II

Mass media is desensitizing all of us. We are becoming more and more tolerant of vulgar and what used to be unacceptable behavior. It's a two edged sword.

In some ways this allows us to more readily adapt to situations that are shocking to us and yet socially acceptable to others. In a global village this can be a handy adaptation.

In other ways we become more tolerant of abhorrent behavior. People will stand by and watch because that is what they have been programmed to do.

People started all this moral dodge ball by placing the blame for their monstrous offspring on TV and Video-games. They did a disservice to the rest of us and denied their own failures. They pointed their crooked little fingers at some one creating another film or game. When they raised their shaking hand three of those fingers were pointing in the right direction. To all of you attempting to censor someone's work, I say,

Raise your children.

You know what's disgusting about the game? I hop into a cab- not jack it, but actually as a passenger- and the cabbie runs someone over, raising my Wanted Level to 1 star. As the police are trying to stop the cab, the cabbie then runs over a police officer, incurring my 2nd star to my Wanted Level.

I DIDN'T DO ANYTHING!! I WAS TAKING A CAB!!
