4-H members across the county are putting finishing touches on projects for Saturday's exhibition day at Hayden High School.
About 200 projects by youths across Routt County will be on display, county 4-H Agent Jay Whaley said, adding that categories include sewing, woodworking, entomology, veterinary science and cake decorating. Participants will put on a fashion show for judges at 1 p.m., and another fashion show for the public is at 7 p.m. at the high school.
"It's a free event," Whaley said. "It's all for fun. These kids have been working on these projects all summer long. It's pretty cool to see the parts of 4-H people don't always see."
The group also will award $12,000 in college scholarships at Saturday's event.
4-H participants have said they look forward to putting their work on display.
Tia Rozell, 11, is participating in events including photography this year.
"I take pictures mostly of animals," said Tia, who lives near Oak Creek. "I do the steps they told me, but I can take pictures of whatever."
She also has been sewing for four years and will participate in a clothes-decorating contest.
Annecy Hillmuth, 11, who lives near Milner, shows breeding poultry and horses. The livestock events occur later, during the Routt County Fair.
"Last year, I just did poultry, and I got grand champion in all of my events," Annecy said.
At the Routt County Fairgrounds in Hayden, Fair Manager Jill Delay said preparations are moving forward. The horse show starts Aug. 8, and main fair events run from Aug. 14 to 17.
Delay noted a couple of popular events on Aug. 17: the Pretty Baby Contest at 9 a.m. and the Mayors' Brownie and Commissioners' Cookie Basket contests at 10 a.m.
Both events are open to anyone. Babies are judged in categories such as "best waddle," "brightest eyes" and "cutest dimples." In the baked goods contest, competitors bring in brownies and cookies.
"Presentation matters," Delay said. "Local mayors and commissioners judge all those, so that's a fun one."
