Energy industry career programs get grants
The federal government awarded $10 million to 11 projects that will provide workers with training to enter energy industry careers.
U.S. Secretary of Labor Elaine Chao announced the grants Tuesday. None of the programs was in Colorado.
"These grants awarded under the President's High Growth Job Training Initiative will help equip workers with skills and certifications that are in demand in the energy sector," Chao said in a news release.
Proposed strategies will focus on skills that are in demand by the energy industry and will offer participants paths to long-term careers, according to the release.
The energy industry accounts for 4 percent of the nation's gross domestic product and employs more than 1 million workers nationwide, according to the release. Impending retirements and low numbers of new workers entering energy-related careers are threatening the worker supply.
Projects in California, Florida, Georgia, Indiana, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maryland, Minnesota, Texas, Wisconsin and Wyoming won funding.
