Looking back for July 17, 1958

Peace and tranquility has returned to 11th Street.

The controversy about the construction of a cooperative apartment ended before the town board Friday night with everyone happy. The original building permit for the apartment was revoked by District Judge Edward Keating a week ago Monday and further litigation was indicated.

But Friday night, a willingness to compromise was shown and the board issued a new building permit that was agreeable to everyone.

Mr. and Mrs. J.F. Lake, owners of the adjoining property, brought the district court suit that ended as a victory for them. Friday night, the architect submitted a change in plans so that the proposed garage will face south rather than west and everyone was happy, although it will be only 12 feet from the street line, instead of the 25 feet required by the ordinance.

Hour's blackout cause common

The lights went out and stayed out for a solid hour from Grand Lake past Meeker last Saturday night in the first general outage in 10 years through the Yampa Valley.

Caused by the combination of high winds and lashing lightning, the outage occurred between Grand Lake and Granby cutting off the power supply to four companies in the valley.

Power was restored via Green Mountain after a hectic hour during which hotrodders had a heyday around town, leftover firecrackers were blasted off and candles, flashlights and gas lamps provided the only flickers of light in the night's darkness.

Troubles come in truckloads and the sweeping storm leveled trees in a wide area, interrupting telephone service to boot.

Planning square dance festival Aug. 1 and 2

All the color, excitement and activity of a western town hosting its residents and guests will be evident in the Ninth Annual Square Dance Festival here Aug. 1 and 2.

Ed Gilmore, famous across the nation, will be master of ceremonies and chief caller during the festival. He has made many recordings on the Balance label and runs a popular workshop every year at Glenwood Springs. His return to Steamboat will be popular with many residents who are familiar with his fine work.

The versatile Sons of the Rockies from Fort Collins will provide music for the do-si-doers at the festival. The group has had a program on a Denver radio station and was well-received at the festival here last year.

Bleachers will be set up this year in front of the Community Hall for spectators to comfortably watch the high-stepping in the cool evenings Friday and Saturday. Featured Saturday night during the street dance, when Fifth Street will be closed to traffic in front of the hall, will be a raised platform for guest dancers to show their specialities to the audience.

A nice package deal is offered to enthusiasts, and the charge for attendance at all events both days will be only $3.50. This price includes the Friday pre-festival dancing with Ed Gilmore calling at 8 p.m., the Saturday afternoon workshop at 2 p.m. with Ed Gilmore instructing and the evening street festival.
