Kara Givnish: Community thanks

— The 2008 Hot Air Balloon Rodeo was a huge success. I could not let the chance pass to share my gratitude and appreciation with the entire community.

In 2007, we faced some challenges as we found a new location for the Hot Air Balloon Rodeo. With the dedication of Ed MacArthur making the Bald Eagle Lake location work for the Balloon Rodeo, we were able to surpass those challenges. This year we were on the U.S. Highway 40 side of the ski jump, which was not an option last year. Ed MacArthur cleared out a large area that was perfect for the 38 pilots to inflate.

On Sunday, with the approval of Kurt Weiss, we were able to send the chase vehicles out a back exit via Weiss' property, making the walk in for the attendees all the more safe.

The transportation was another main issue that was overcome this year with the help of Steamboat Springs Transit and Jonathon Flint, who supplied a handful of buses and bus drivers to transport attendees from the Meadows parking lot to the Bald Eagle Lake property. Steamboat Springs School District bus drivers joined in to add more transportation from Meadows. Numerous lodging properties shuttled their guests directly to and from the Balloon Rodeo, which made a huge difference as we were down to five parking spots in the Meadows lot on Saturday.

The hardworking volunteers that joined us both Saturday and Sunday were immensely helpful at the parking lot and launch field. With their help, the pilots, attendees and all involved enjoyed two beautiful, smooth-running days.

The Steamboat Springs Chamber Resort Association and 2008 Hot Air Balloon Rodeo Committee could not be more thankful to everyone who contributed to the 2008 Hot Air Balloon Rodeo. We look forward to the incredible community participation again next year!
