— There is nothing fancy about today's Thunderhead Hill Climb.

The third Town Challenge Mountain Bike Series race of the season pits racers against 4.73 miles of uphill riding.

The course, which starts at the base of the gondola at the Steamboat Ski Area, climbs to the top of Thunderhead via the Zig Zag trail.

"It's a pure-on hill climb," Town Challenge director Gretchen Sehler said.

It will be the first course at the ski area this year after races at Howelsen Hill and Marabou ranch preservation subdivision.

Sehler said she set the course Sunday and that it's in great shape.

"It's always recommended for those that haven't ridden Zig Zag ever or this year to always know your course," Sehler said. "I always set it on Sunday."

All adults and juniors between ages 16 and 18 will ride the 4.73-mile course. There will be shorter courses for juniors ages 15 and younger as well as the Miller Lite division. All courses begin at the bottom of the Gondola and climb varying distances.

Sehler encouraged people to bring extra clothes for the ride down. She said her crew will have several vehicles going to the top and that any items can be put in the vehicles for safe travel up.

She encouraged people to park at the Knoll Parking Lot or the underground lot next to the Sheraton Steamboat Resort. The Gondola parking lot is unavailable because of construction.

Sehler encouraged people to register as early as possible. Registration will run from 4:30 p.m. and close at 5:45 p.m. sharp.
