— South Routt School District Superintendent Scott Mader announced Monday that the school district is looking for additional applicants in the search for a new principal at Soroco High School and Middle School.

The district initially interviewed three applicants last week, including former Steamboat Springs High School Principal Mike Knezevich. Mader said Knezevich no longer is in the running for the position.

Mader said Marilyn Flammang, an elementary school principal from Basin, Wyo., who was interviewed July 2, is still a possible hire. Knezevich and Phil Thomas, of Goodland, Kan., were eliminated as finalists.

Reached on Monday, Knezevich said he is looking at other options but has no plans to leave Steamboat Springs.

New candidate Dennis Alt will be interviewed Thursday. Alt has worked as a science teacher in Middle Park High School, part of the East Grand School District, since 2006. Before that he taught at East Grand Middle School.

The candidates are applying for the position created when former principal James Chamberlin accepted a position with East Grand schools as the district's newly created director of student achievement.

Mader said the position remains open as the search for a new principal continues. He said he could not explain why candidates were eliminated from the search.

The Steamboat Springs School Board voted June 9 to not renew Knezevich's contract as Steamboat Springs High School principal for the 2008-09 school year.
