Steamboat Springs — Steamboat Springs High School wrestler Houston Mader had the Valley Tournament circled as a chance to look at potential state wrestling opponents.

Unfortunately for the senior, sickness caught up with him first.

"I didn't even wrestle," Mader said. "I got too sick to even weigh in."

While it was unlikely Mader would have seen any regional opponents at the match, the Valley Tournament usually brings in some of the top wrestlers in the state.

Mader said he hopes to be fully rested by the middle of the week in preparation for Saturday's Routt County Tri at the high school.

"Mostly, at least right now, I'm just trying to get better," Mader said. "I'm trying to get my conditioning even better. It's pretty good, but I could get better."

Steamboat's other wrestler - sophomore Derek Morris - had hoped to return from a broken bone in his hand to wrestle in the Valley event. But Morris also wasn't ready to go. The 135-pounder has a doctor's visit today and hopes to be ready Saturday. After Saturday's meet, Steamboat heads to Hanna, Wyo., for a two-day tournament. Then, on Feb. 15 and 16, the Sailors are in Moffat County for the regional tournament.

Nordic teams place second, fifth in Leadville

The Steamboat Springs High School girls Nordic team finished second Saturday in a pursuit race in Leadville, just nine points behind eventual winner Summit.

The pursuit race involved a 3.3-kilometer classic mass start race, followed by another 3.3-kilometer skate race.

Melissa Krause was the top finisher for Steamboat, finishing in fifth place. Krause was fourth in the classic portion of the race and sixth in the skate race. Mary Rose finished sixth, Liza Stout finished 17th and Lexie Ruppel came in at 28th.

On the boys' side, Steamboat finished fifth as a team.

Vail Mountain got first, Aspen was second, Summit was third and Lake County was fourth.

Kyle Steitz was the top Steamboat boys finisher, coming in 12th. Peter Daley finished 15th, and Jasper Gantick came in 30th.

The Nordic team has two

more meets - Saturday in Middle Park and Feb. 5 in Nederland - before the state skiing championships in Steamboat on Feb. 21 and 22.
