The Soroco and Hayden boys and girls basketball teams will look to get back into the win column when the two teams resume league play today.
The Soroco boys (2-8 overall, 0-2 in league) and girls (5-5, 0-2) travel to Grand Valley today for 5:30 and 7 p.m. games. Both teams then play North Park at 2:30 and 4 p.m. Saturday at home.
Hayden travels to North Park today. The boys (4-5, 1-1) play at 7 p.m. while the girls (6-3, 1-1) play at 5:30 p.m.
Steamboat Springs The Steamboat Springs High School boys basketball team can't redo yesterday.
The team can't make up for a lazy practice or a half-hearted effort in a game.
So while the weekend's slate of games against three-win teams Eagle Valley and Battle Mountain doesn't ring with playoff battles or league title fights, the games are as important as any to Steamboat coach Kelly Meek.
Steamboat plays Eagle Valley at 7 p.m. on their home court, and Battle Mountain at 7 p.m. Saturday on the road.
"We need to work on everything," Meek said of the Sailors. "I know that's a dull answer, but it's everything we're doing dull in practice or games. I can't think of anything we're satisfied with or can be satisfied with in our system."
It's not that Meek's unhappy with his players or the team's 11-2 overall record.
But the veteran coach knows that with less than five weeks left in the season, and with Western Slope League opponents taking their best shot to end the Sailors' 21-game league winning streak, Steamboat boys basketball is not where it needs to be to make a deep playoff run.
"We have to work every day mentally and physically," Meek said. "You have to do what you can do so your team is stronger."
The Eagle Valley Devils beat the Battle Mountain Huskies 57-55 on Tuesday, thanks to a buzzer-beating 3-pointer by point guard Cesar Castillo. The Devils could give the Sailors problems with their multiple sets.
Meek said Eagle Valley's offense is predicated through the high post, but will get players the ball in the post as well as create mismatch problems.
"We've talked about it - we're the highlight on their schedule. For both these teams," Meek said. "We're going to be the highlight on everybody's schedule. We have to be ready for aggressive, quick, athletic play."
Although Steamboat certainly has areas to improve, Meek said overall he's been extremely happy with the way his players and coaches have progressed.
"I'm very proud of the players and what they're doing," he said. "I appreciate the focus they're bringing and our other coaches, when that type of thing happens, you learn to take the lead and it should strengthen the team."
