South Routt fire extinguished

Firefighters from across the county battled a blaze at a South Routt barn Friday night, off Colorado Highway 131 north of Oak Creek.

The fire was extinguished around 9 p.m., after a joint effort between the Oak Creek and Yampa Fire Protection Districts and Steamboat Springs Fire Rescue, though firefighters were still working to put out hotspots, said Oak Creek Fire Protection District Chief Chuck Wisecup.

The barn was fully engulfed, but the flames were confined to the structure and did not spread.

No people or livestock were hurt in the fire, Wisecup said. The barn's owners are missing a dog, but the animal is believed to have run off and not been harmed, he said.
