Stabbing case continued as defense firm withdraws

The law firm representing a man accused of stabbing another man during a July 6, 2007, fight at a downtown bar has withdrawn from the case.

During an arraignment hearing for Christopher Allen Hamm on Monday, attorney Jeff Weeden requested that District Judge Shelley Hill allow the firm of Feldmann, Nagel and Associates to withdraw as Hamm's legal representation. Weeden said Hamm had not complied with the "client agreement." Judge Hill granted the request.

Hamm faces felony charges of second-degree assault and committing a bias-motivated crime in connection with the July 6, 2007, stabbing of Alfred Turner in the leg at a Steamboat Springs bar. Police say Hamm, a Michigan resident who is working in Steamboat, got into an altercation with Turner after telling him to stop talking to two white women. Turner is black.

Hamm is scheduled to appear in court at 11 a.m. Jan. 28 to enter a plea.

Weeden told Judge Hill during Monday's hearing that talks have been ongoing with the District Attorney's Office, but that neither side has reached agreement on a plea deal.

After Monday's hearing, Weeden said neither he nor Feldmann would comment about the case because the firm no longer represent Hamm. Deputy District Attorney Andy Heyl said it is the policy of the District Attorney's Office not to comment on ongoing cases.
